CELEBRITIES’ COLLECTIONS I

by Hyojin Cho

Far from being a banal space, our home can be a reflection of our personality, revealing our tastes and our sensitivity, away from the gaze of others and from social obligations. In “Celebrities’ collections”, ACA project explores houses of people collecting art, in order to discover their own taste and pick of pieces by contemporary artists from Asia. What do these celebrities want to communicate about themselves through artworks in their home? What detail did attract them to hang those specific pieces on their wall? Are there any personal stories related to those artworks? For the first article of “Celebrities’ collections”, ACA project introduces you to the interior of K-pop group Big Bang’s stars.

All members of the mega K-pop group, Big Bang, are well known to be interested in art collecting, especially Choi Seung-hyun (a.k.a T.O.P) who once said he normally spends 95% of his income on collecting artworks. His house in Korea is full of diverse and huge amounts of artists’ works from famous artists to young artists, from all over the world. Choi Seung-hyun has even been included in the “100 top collectors you should know” published by Cobo Social in 2017.

On the other hand, Dong Young-bae (a.k.a Taeyang), another member of Big Bang, is also known as an art lover and collector. When he was on the Korea television entertainment program of « I Live Alone », showing how single celebrities live in their home alone, lots of artworks of his collection, from David Hockney, Jonas Wood, Paik Nam-june, Lee Ufan, Madsaki toTakashi Murakami’s art pieces, caught many art lovers’ eyes.

Dong Young-bae won a bid for 590,000 USD at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hong Kong on May 28, 2017 for Paik Nam-june’s video installation « Stag », 1996. This was a new record as the highest price for the artist. The animal-shaped video sculpture was originally made in 1996 and features four television monitors that play sexually suggestive videos. A Lee Ufan’s painting for “With Winds” series, 1988, is hanging on the bedroom wall of Dong Young-bae’s house. Lee Ufan is the founder of the « Monoha » movement, a modern art movement that explored and presented its properties of natural materials such as paper, stone, and wood, away from the existing framework of painting using canvas and brushes. Starting with the « From Line » and ”From Point” series, repeatedly filling the canvas with lines having individual different sizes and line spacing in the 1970s and the « With Winds » series emphasizing the movement of bold and tangled lines in the 1980s, he has continued his work with the « Dialogue » series, which contains one brush on a large canvas, since the 1990s. Artworks from the « With Winds » series are known to be worth between 1 million and 1.6 million USD today. Besides, Dong Young-bae showed his expanded collection after marrying Korean actress Min Hyo-rin in 2018, by posting artworks of Madsaki and Takashi Murakami, Japanese contemporary artists, on his Instagram account.
