EXHIBITION REVIEW – RIVERS AND ROADS @ AAIE, ROME

by Valeria Contarino

Artistes participants : Arpita Akhanda, Akshay Raj Singh Rathore, Ranjeeta Kumari, Mario D’souza, Darshan Manjare, Jahnvi Lakhota Nandan, Amol K Patil, Rupali Patil, Manjot Kaur, Birender Yadav et Vanshika Agrawal

Rivers and Roads – Meandering Stories of India – Poster Invitation

The Centre for Contemporary Art AAIE in Rome (Italy) inaugurates the exhibition « Rivers and Roads: Meandering stories of India », a group show that brings together the work of eleven internationally renowned Indian artists. Through paintings, installations, photographs, immersive video projections and fragrances, the viewer is taken into a multi-sensory dimension. « Rivers and Roads wants to evoke belonging to one’s own land from the point of view of its inhabitants and immigrants », explains Valeria Contarino, co-curator of the exhibition, « the exhibition presents eleven artists and a series of stories about India: to the works of those who still live there are added works of those who have been forced to leave their country of origin. The stories of everyday life are mixed with memories of an India lived in childhood or rediscovered in the stories of parents and grandparents. » The exhibition presents a series of fascinating and intriguing Indian tales, where reality and memories intertwine.

India is a country characterized by its struggles for freedom, the division of its territory, the interactions between the many religions, thousands of dialects and local cultures, but also by the everydayness of life, such as the sounds of traffic, the hot naan prepared on wooden chaklas, the garlands of jasmine flowers sold in the market, the sound of water in the rivers, the sight of colorful saree. The artists’ practices contextualize a vivid syncretism that colors the hues of the country.

Participating artists: Arpita Akhanda, Akshay Raj Singh Rathore, Ranjeeta Kumari, Mario D’souza, Darshan Manjare, Jahnvi Lakhota Nandan, Amol K Patil, Rupali Patil, Manjot Kaur, Birender Yadav and Vanshika Agrawal
