The Musée Rodin in Paris invites the sculptor of Chinese origin Wang Keping from May, 3rd to June, 5th 2022 to work in the garden in a carte blanche entitled « Wang Keping at work ».

An artist from the Chinese avant-garde group Stars (星星1979-1980), Wang Keping has lived in France since 1984. At the end of the 1970’s, he began to sculpt and develop work based on his favorite material : wood. The artist’s work consists of direct carvings on impressive wood trunks, revealing sensual forms. His sculptures suggest feminine bodies, couples interlacing or animals. As Wang Keping likes to say «  the wood whispers its secret to me », a way to remind that the wood itself inspires the final created by the artist. Like Auguste Rodin, Wang Keping finds his inspiration in nature and life. Rodin is the first European sculptor that Wang Keping discovered due to photographs that were secretly circulating in Beijing in the late 1970’s.

In this exhibition, the audience will be able to meet the sculptor and see him during the finishing stage on four sculptures. Wang Keping burns each sculpture in its entirety using a blowtorch in order to soften the angles and give them a deep black patina. A finished piece, « L’Amour des forêts », is exhibited in the hall of the museum.

« Wang Keping at work », until June 5th 2022, at Musée Rodin, Paris
