EXHIBITION – LIN GUOCHENG @ GALERIE DUMONTEIL, SHANGHAI

By Camille Despré

Galerie Dumonteil Shanghai presents until June 30th « Moonlight Mile in the Snow », an exhibition dedicated to the Chinese artist Lin Guocheng and his ink pen drawings.

Currently working between Beijing and Kunming (Yunnan), Lin Guocheng left highschool in order to become an artist and learn by himself the ink pen technique – known as gangbi 钢笔, a traditional technique in China –. Influenced by both European medieval and Renaissance engraving masters, especially Albrecht Dürer, and by a profound understanding of Chinese philosophies and literati paintings, his gesture switches between small condensed engraving strokes and long smooth flowing lines ; intricate details play alongside the use of blanking.

The artist express his reflexions on taoism aesthetics and the flow of his own state of mind on his large format works. He sums up his seek of the fluidic Qi – the circulating life force, a central concept in Taoïsm – and his pursuit of beauty with this quote :“Whether it is an instant or eternity, solidity or liquidity, there is no definite answer. Things are neither tangible nor empty, which provides artists with a vast creative space where they experience moments of life and eternity in one picture, transcending the material world and pursuing their spirituality.
