It was in 2012, after looking for old photographs at an antique shop in Italy, that Japanese artist Kensuke Koike oriented his work towards the process of image manipulation. Cutting, folding, piercing, disassembling, reconstructing and pasting precisely and meticulously : the artist breathes a new life and a surrealist spirit into these vintage shots, following a unique rule « nothing is removed, nothing is added ».
Invited by the curator Alessandra Chiericato, Kensuke Koike did a residency at SEPTIEME gallery, in association with THE ROOM, at the end of 2019. Fallen in love with a stranger he discovered on a picture at the Paris flea market, the artist performed multiple manipulations and reconstructions on about fifty reproductions of this photograph. They’ve been covering the walls of the gallery, day by day.

C’est en 2012 en Italie, après avoir chiné de vieilles photographies chez un antiquaire, que l’artiste japonais Kensuke Koike oriente son travail vers la manipulation d’images. Découper, plier, percer, désassembler, reconstruire, coller… avec précision et minutie, l’artiste insuffle à ces clichés vintage un nouveau récit aux accents surréalistes, suivant une règle unique « rien n’est enlevé, rien n’est ajouté ».
A l’invitation de la curatrice Alessandra Chiericato, Kensuke Koike effectue une résidence à SEPTIEME gallery fin 2019, en association avec THE ROOM. Tombé fou amoureux d’une inconnue qu’il découvre en image au marché aux puces de Paris, l’artiste réalise de multiples manipulations et reconstructions à partir d’une cinquantaine de reproductions de cette photographie, qui viennent jour après jour tapisser les murs de la galerie.
