EXHIBITION – ODE, GAO BO @ PAVILLON DES JOUETS, VERNON

Après plusieurs années de travaux, le tant attendu « Pavillon des Jouets » ouvre ses portes dans la commune de Vernon, en Normandie, dans les environs des célèbres Atelier et Jardin de Claude Monet et de la Maison de Pierre Bonnard sur la route de Giverny.

A l’initiative de l’artiste d’origine chinoise Gao Bo, le Pavillon des Jouets se veut être un lieu d’échange et de partage, autour de l’amour pour l’art et la culture. Le rez-de-chaussée de cette ancienne usine de torréfaction de café accueillera désormais des artistes en résidence, des expositions et une programmation d’événements festifs et culturels ouverts à tous les publics. Au premier étage, sous la magnifique verrière à l’armature de fer puddlé, Gao Bo a installé ses valises, ses yourtes et son atelier.

Pour son exposition inaugurale, le Pavillon des Jouets réunit deux installations majeures de Gao Bo : « Ode » (2018) et « Offrande au Mandala » (2016).

« Ode » présente cinq gongs conçus par l’artiste, forgés artisanalement en Chine, selon les méthodes anciennes, dans une fonderie de bronze située dans un village de la province de Hubei. Sur chaque face des cinq gongs, l’artiste a gravé une calligraphie spontanée, reprenant un langage récurrent dans toute son œuvre. Sur l’autre face est gravée une spirale. Chaque gong est accompagné d’un maillet constitué d’un caillou ficelé par une corde de lin. Celui-ci est mis en mouvement par le déplacement des visiteurs, capté par un système d’infrarouges. Ainsi le visiteur devient le compositeur d’une mélodie commune. Une ampoule est placée au centre de l’ensemble des gongs. L’œuvre comprend également une vidéo d’une performance captée dans la forêt domaniale de Mormal située dans les Hauts-de- France.

L’installation « Offrande au Mandala » se compose d’une série de larges photographies présentées en duo, tels des « doubles portraits » associant un visage et un masque, barrés de néons rouges formant une croix. Christian Caujolle en parle en ces mots : « Ses “doubles portraits”, en associant un visage et un masque, en inversant le sens du masque, nous proposent des figures dont la perfection formelle renvoie à une vision d’harmonie du monde, d’une cohérence interne ancrée dans le temps, dans l’histoire, dans les pratiques collectives. Le rapprochement de l’image d’un visage d’aujourd’hui, figé au moyen d’une chambre ancienne, et d’un masque qui est une autre forme de représentation du visage, par d’autres formes techniques et avec d’autres propos rituels, s’inscrit dans une culture de la complémentarité des extrêmes et de la permanence du double. De même que notre regard circule de l’un à l’autre pour les embrasser dans une totalité avant d’en percevoir les détails ou les traits, de même que nous avons envie de les faire tourner sans cesse pour en saisir la cohérence mystérieuse et la cohérence interne, cette pratique du “portrait” nous renvoie plus que jamais à la question de l’identité de l’autre face à son histoire, à sa culture. »

L’exposition « Ode » se visite sur rendez-vous jusqu’en janvier 2024, au Pavillon des Jouets (134 route de Giverny, Vernon).

La programmation culturelle du Pavillon des Jouets débutera au printemps 2024 avec une résidence et une exposition de l’artiste Sarah Jérôme, en collaboration avec la Galerie Vazieux, dans le cadre du Festival Normandie Impressionniste 2024.

After a couple of years of renovation, the long-awaited « Pavillon des Jouets » opens its doors in the town of Vernon, in Normandy, in the vicinity of the famous Claude Monet’s Studio and Garden and Pierre Bonnard’s House on the Route de Giverny.

On the initiative of the artist of Chinese origin Gao Bo, the Pavillon des Jouets aims to be a place of exchange and sharing, around the passion for art and culture. The ground floor of this former coffee roasting factory will now host artists in residence, exhibitions and a program of festive and cultural events open to all audiences. On the first floor, under the magnificent glass roof with its puddled iron frame, Gao Bo has set up his suitcases, his yurts and his artistic studio.

For its inaugural exhibition, the Pavillon des Jouets brings together two major installations by Gao Bo: “Ode” (2018) and “Offrande au Mandala” (2016).

“Ode” presents five gongs designed by the artist, forged by hand in China, according to ancient methods, in a bronze foundry located in a village in the province of Hubei. On each side of the five gongs, the artist has engraved a spontaneous calligraphy, using a recurring language throughout his work. On the other side is engraved a spiral. Each gong is accompanied by a mallet made of a pebble tied with a linen rope. This is set in motion by the movement of visitors, captured by an infrared system. Thus the visitor becomes the composer of a common melody. A light bulb is placed in the center of all the gongs. The work also includes a video of a performance captured in the Mormal national forest located in Hauts-de-France.

The installation “Offrande au Mandala” is made up of a series of large photographs presented in pairs, like “double portraits” combining a face and a mask, crossed out with red neon lights. Christian Caujolle talks about it in these words: “His “double portraits”, by associating a face and a mask, by inverting the meaning of the mask, offer us figures whose formal perfection refers to a vision of harmony of the world, of an internal coherence anchored in time, in history, in collective practices. By bringing together the image of a face from today, captured by an old optical chamber, and a mask which is another form of representation of the face, by other technical forms and with other ritual remarks, is part of a culture of the complementarity of extremes and the permanence of the double. Just as our gaze moves from one to the other to embrace them as a whole before perceiving the details or the traits, just as we want to rotate them constantly to grasp their mysterious and internal coherence, this practice of “portrait” refers us more than ever to the question of the identity of the other in the face of their history, its culture. »

The “Ode” exhibition can be visited by appointment until January 2024, at the Pavillon des Jouets (134 route de Giverny, Vernon).

The cultural programming of the Pavillon des Jouets will begin in spring 2024 with a residency and an exhibition by the artist Sarah Jérôme, in collaboration with the Galerie Vazieux, as part of the 2024 Normandy Impressionist Festival.
