“Promeneur”, le titre français de cette exposition à Pékin interpelle. Il faut entrer dans une ancienne usine désaffectée du célèbre quartier 798, gravir quelques marches pour accéder à la galerie Bonian Space pour enfin déceler tout le mystère de cet intitulé et se laisser surprendre par les peintures de Lin Wenjie. Si ce titre est dans la langue de Molière, c’est parce que la jeune artiste a fait une partie de ses études à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Rouen après sa formation à la prestigieuse CAFA de Pékin. Ce sont alors des peintures empruntées au monde, voire empreintes du monde que nous découvrons. L’artiste nous invite à la flânerie, à se promener au milieu de paysages à la nature luxuriante, qui contrastent avec l’espace de la galerie à la vocation d’abord industrielle.
C’est un peu comme ces plantes tropicales que l’on retrouve sous des architectures de verre dans les toiles Greenhouse Tour et Boy Running. Les serres produisent aussi cet effet de surprise. Ce sont des lieux propices à jouir du plaisir de voir une nature venue d’ailleurs, habituellement inaccessible. C’est ainsi au milieu des cactus que le regard se promène, souvent guidé par un chemin que l’artiste dessine au sol et qui est emprunté par des figures de promeneurs.
Car bien que le véritable sujet des peintures de Lin Wenjie soit la nature, il y a sur certaines d’elles la présence de promeneurs anonymes et solitaires. L’artiste semble utiliser leur marche comme prétexte pour poser une attention sur ce qui les entoure. Conduit par un cavalier, le diptyque Seashores nous invite à saisir la puissance du vent qui couche les arbres, à deviner l’enracinement profond de leurs troncs solides, à percevoir l’équilibre naturel entre la terre aride, et non loin de là, la présence rassurante de la mer.
Avec espièglerie, l’exposition présente ce paysage sauvage à côté de la peinture Artificial Lake. Peu importe alors que les paysages soient naturels ou artificiels, qu’il s’agisse de mauvaises herbes, d’une végétation sous serre, ou de plantes mises en pot, ils constituent tous des lieux propices à contempler, à suivre un chemin intérieur.
Tout comme elle ne différencie pas le naturel de l’artificiel, l’artiste ne veut pas différencier la vision de l’impression. Les verts saturés des plantes, les tonalités roses éclatantes des fleurs, les ciels bleu vif que Lin Wenjie peint sont non seulement un hommage aux impressionnistes dont les œuvres ont marqué ses premières années d’études en Normandie, mais également une manière de penser symboliquement le monde : vibrant et florissant.

“Promeneur”, the French title of this exhibition in Beijing calls out. You have to enter an old disused factory in the famous 798 district, climb a few steps to access the Bonian Space gallery to finally uncover all the mystery of this title and be surprised by the paintings of Lin Wenjie. If this title is in the language of Molière, it is because the young artist did part of her studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rouen after her training at the prestigious CAFA in Beijing. Then, we understand that these are paintings borrowed from the world, even imprinted with the world that we discover. The artist invites us to stroll, to walk through lush natural landscapes, which contrast with the space of the gallery, which is primarily industrial in nature.
It’s a bit like the tropical plants that we find under glass architecture in the paintings ‘Greenhouse Tour’ and ‘Boy Running’. Greenhouses also produce this effect of surprise. These are places conducive to enjoying the pleasure of seeing nature from elsewhere, usually inaccessible. It is thus among the cacti that the eye wanders, often guided by a path that the artist draws on the ground and which is taken by the figures of walkers.
Although the real subject of Lin Wenjie’s paintings is nature, in some of them there is the presence of anonymous and solitary walkers. The artist seems to use their walk as a pretext to pay attention to what surrounds them. Led by a horse rider, the ‘Seashores’ diptych invites us to grasp the power of the wind which lies down the trees, to guess the deep roots of their solid trunks, to perceive the natural balance between the arid earth, and not far from there, the reassuring presence of the sea.
Playfully, the exhibition presents this wild landscape alongside the painting ‘Artificial Lake’. It doesn’t matter whether the landscapes are natural or artificial, whether they are weeds, greenhouse vegetation, or potted plants, they all constitute places conducive to contemplation, to following an interior path.
Just as she does not differentiate the natural from the artificial, the artist does not want to differentiate vision from impression. The saturated greens of the plants, the bright pink tones of the flowers, the bright blue skies that Lin Wenjie paints are not only a tribute to the Impressionists whose works marked her first years of study in Normandy, but also a way of symbolically thinking about the world: vibrant and flourishing.
